The prevalence of pancreatic morphological abnormalities detected by digital autopsy

Chronic pancreatitis (CP) is a chronic condition characterized by irreversible fibrosis of the pancreatic parenchyma, accompanied by calcification and dilatation of the main pancreatic duct (MPD) and its branches [1]. A more recent proposal for a new mechanistic definition consensus suggests that ‘common features of established and advanced CP may include pancreatic atrophy, duct distortion and strictures and calcifications’ [2]. These pancreatic morphological abnormalities (PMA) are identifiable on computed tomography (CT) which is recommended when CP is suspected [3].
