Authors: Staico MF, Zaffanello M, Di Pietro G, Fanos V, Marcialis MA Abstract The etiology of injury in COVID-19 patients is diverse and multifactorial. Autopsy and biopsy studies reveal, alongside podocyte and tubular cell anomalies, the presence of virion within the cells. Evidence suggests that, in addition to the direct cytopathic effect of SARS- CoV2 on the glomeruli and renal tubules, there is also the indirect effect of cell-mediated immunity, the cytokines storm and the cross-talk between organs with possible systemic effects of the disease. These mechanisms are interconnected and have profound therapeutic ...

Authors: Yang N, Yang W, Cui W, Zhou D, Du X, Li L Abstract Vascular calcification (VC) is an important promoter of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD). Several indices can be used to evaluate VC, including the abdominal aortic calcification index (AACI) and carotid artery intima-media thickness (IMT); however, simpler and lesser expensive predictors, such as the radial augmentation index (RAI), should be investigated. A total of 101 patients undergoing PD were recruited to measure RAI, AACI, and carotid artery IMT and perform echocardiography. Fifty healthy controls (HCs) w...

This study aimed to evaluate the impact of serum uric acid (UA) over time on residual renal function (RRF) loss in a cohort of patients with CAPD.Methods: A total of 201 patients who started CAPD therapy between January 1, 2008 and April 30, 2016 were included in this single-center, retrospective cohort study. All patients were followed up until December 31, 2016. The median follow-up time was 23.43 ± 16.60 months. RRF loss was represented as the time to anuria. Results: Eighty-six patients developed anuria within 5 years. Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that time-averaged seru...

A 24-year-old man, with type 1 primary hyperoxaluria (diagnosed at age 20 years after repeated renal lithiasis, due to a I244T mutation frequently encountered in Mediterranean countries) complicated by end-stage renal failure requiring dialysis, was admitted for pancytopenia, refractory to erythropoietin injections. On clinical examination, he presented a hepatosplenomegaly without palpable adenopathy. 18F-FDG PET/CT revealed intense and diffuse bone marrow uptake in the axial skeleton and preferential long bone metaphyseal uptake. Bone marrow aspiration showed Gaucher-like cells infiltration due to oxalate accumulation in...

We describe three cases of peritoneal dialysis catheter obstruction with complete fibrin casts, its surgical management and a review of the literature in management techniques and have proposed an algorithm to guide clinical practise when a complete intraluminal peritoneal dialysis catheter obstruction is suspected. Conclusions: Smoking may be a significant mediator of not only BP but also of chronic fluid overload in ESRD patents. Additional, larger studies are needed to explore the mechanistic link between smoking and volume overload. PMID: 32349634 [PubMed - in process]

CONCLUSION: Findings suggest that using BRT as a non-pharmacological intervention may effectively enhance the ADLs of HD patients. PMID: 32379668 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

In conclusion, the majority would recommend an AVF as the mode of vascular access for HD. The most common barrier to having an AVF was patient's refusal to undergo AVF creation because of their concern about the surgical procedure. A systematic evaluation of the process that precedes the creation of AVF may allow for better utilization. PMID: 32338112 [PubMed - in process]

In 2011-2012, the Ministry of Health reported it was the leading cause of hospital deaths in men, the fifth in women, and the third overall in adult hospital fa-talities. Farming was the most common occupation amo...
