Excess mortality for people diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 2012 – Estimates based on claims data from 70 million Germans

ConclusionIn Germany, men and women in 2012 with T2D aged 65–90 years experienced a three-to four-fold higher mortality compared to people without T2D, which might indicate that the excess mortality could be higher than in countries with comparable health care systems. Female sex and younger age were associated with higher excess mortality.

Publication date: June 2019Source: Revista Portuguesa de Cardiologia (English Edition), Volume 38, Issue 6Author(s): Murat Ziyrek, Serkan Kahraman, Emrah Ozdemir, Ali DoganAbstractIntroductionImbalance between pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines secreted from visceral adipose tissue (VAT) contributes to the pathogenesis of certain cardiovascular and metabolic disorders, including insulin resistance. Epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) is a form of VAT mainly concentrated along the coronary arteries. It has been shown in various studies that EAT thickness is positively correlated with cardiovascular disease. Due to its high wo...

ConclusionsLean body mass was not associated with incident type 2 diabetes when excluding cases that may have been subclinical at baseline. The results imply that public health should focus on reduction of fat mass for diabetes prevention.

llo Persico Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common cause of chronic liver disease worldwide and its incidence is definitely increasing. NAFLD is a metabolic disease with extensive multi-organ involvement, whose extra-hepatic manifestations include type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, obstructive sleep apnea, chronic kidney disease, osteoporosis, and polycystic ovarian syndrome. Recently, further evidence has given attention to pathological correlations not strictly related to metabolic disease, also incorporating in this broad spectrum of systemic involvement hypothyroidism, psoriasis,...

AbstractPurpose of ReviewTo review the clinical trial data and underlying mechanistic principles in support of the robust cardiovascular (CV) benefits, in particular, heart failure (HF) outcomes association with sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors.Recent FindingsSeveral large CV outcome trials in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and with either established atherosclerotic CV disease (ASCVD) or at high risk for ASCVD reveal that SGLT2 inhibitors cause reductions in CV and HF endpoints. The reduction in ASCVD appears to be confined to those with established ASCVD on the order of ≈ 14%...

AbstractPurpose of ReviewRecent advances in genomics provide opportunities for novel understanding of the biology of human traits with the goal of improving human health. Here, we review recent obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D) –related genomic studies in African populations and discuss the implications of limited genomics studies on health disparity and precision medicine.Recent FindingsGenome-wide association studies in Africans have yielded genetic discovery that would otherwise not be possible; these include identification of novel loci associated with obesity (SEMA-4D,PRKCA,WARS2), metabolic syndrome (CA-10,CTNN...

AbstractPurpose of ReviewThis review aims to provide a summary of the evaluation and treatment of older adults ( ≥ 65 years) with type 2 diabetes and/or hyperglycemia in the hospital.Recent FindingsCaring for these older adults requires special considerations. Diabetes is a risk factor for hospitalization and hyperglycemia in the hospital is associated with increased complications and mortality. Treatment plans for hospitalized older adults with diabetes should include a comprehensive geriatric assessment. This team-based approach aims to develop an individualized care plan, with consideration of the patient...
