Medical decision-making can be very complicated. With so many options and high-tech interventions, it ’s no wonder patients and their families can become overwhelmed and bewildered when faced with choices in light of serious illness. Our job, and really our sacred duty, is to help patients and families understand not just the options being presented but also their probable benefits and burdens in the context of their current medical condition, their prognosis, and their lifelong values and goals.
