New Partnership Expands Medigus ’ Presence to Orthopedics

Medigus is entering bold new territory thanks in part to a manufacturing and development agreement with A.M. Surgical, an orthopedics company. Omer, Israel -based Medigus has primarily been known for its MUSE technology that performs the Transoral Fundoplication for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). MUSE includes the ScoutCam miniature camera technology, which is at the center of this partnership. “The [ScoutCam] technology can be optimized and used in other ways in addition to being inside MUSE,” Chris Rowland, CEO of Medigus, told MD+DI. “The orthopedic market is interesting because there is a chance to disrupt the existing modality of reusable scopes, whether they are laparoscopes or endoscopes. Think of our miniature camera as putting a set of eyes on the distal tip of a therapeutic tool.” The agreement requires Medigus to develop and manufacture an integrated visualization device based on its micro ScoutCam technology to work with Stratos, the A.M. Surgical product for endoscopic procedures. Under the agreement, Medigus will provide prototypes of the integrated visualization device, followed by production of the first two batches of the integrated visualization device. The total project budget is $780,000, which will be paid based on milestones. The firms said the integrated visualization device may have the long-term potential of offering a higher level of surgical control and visualization during endoscopic carpal tunnel r...

Conclusions: The conventional clinically approved agent ICG is an excellent fluorophore for NIR-II bile duct imaging. Fluorescence cholangiography with ICG in the NIR-II window could provide adequate visualization of the biliary tract structures with increased resolution and penetration depth and might be a valid option to increase the safety of cholecystectomy in difficult cases.

Conclusions: The MDK/ALK axis regulates the self-renewal capacity of GICs by controlling the autophagic degradation of the transcription factor SOX9. Inhibition of the MDK/ALK axis may be a therapeutic strategy to target GICs in GBM patients.

Authors: Cresi F, Cester EA, Salvatore S, De Rose DU, Ripepi A, Magistà AM, Fontana C, Maggiora E, Coscia A, Francavilla R, Cristofori F Abstract Background/Aims: Combined multichannel intraluminal impedance and pH monitoring (MII/pH) is considered the most accurate test to detect gastroesophageal reflux (GER), however lacking reference values. We aim to determine reference values for the pediatric population and to correlate these values with age and postprandial/fasting period. Methods: We evaluated MII/pH traces from patients (newborns, infants, and children) admitted to 3 Italian hospitals and who un...

Authors: Ghisa M, Barberio B, Savarino V, Marabotto E, Ribolsi M, Bodini G, Zingone F, Frazzoni M, Savarino E Abstract Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a complex disorder with heterogeneous symptoms and a multifaceted pathogenetic basis, which prevent a simple diagnostic algorithm or any categorical classification. Clinical history, questionnaires and response to proton pump inhibitor (PPI) therapy are insufficient tools to make a conclusive diagnosis of GERD and further investigations are frequently required. The Lyon Consensus goes beyond the previous classifications and defines endoscopic and functional...

An 81-year-old man presented to the clinic for an annual general medical examination with insomnia and pruritus. His insomnia was associated with nocturnal leg restlessness, foot cramping, and pruritus of his feet. His cramping was not associated with activity and occurred mostly at night. He reported no fevers, weight loss, night sweats, numbness, skin lesions, or purulence. His medical history included obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) treated with continuous positive airway pressure therapy, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, gastroesophageal reflux disease, bilateral chronic onychomycosis of the toenails (recently completed tre...
