A Hippocampal Signature of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Vulnerability
Most people will be exposed to trauma in their lifetime, but only some of those exposed will develop posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This is prototypical of several psychiatric disorders in which environmental exposures play a key role, with addictive disorders as another prominent example. Are there neurobiological signatures that can predict vulnerability to developing psychiatric conditions? If so, can those inform our understanding of mechanisms that mediate vulnerability? A positive answer to the first question suggests the viability of personalized prevention approaches.
