Reliability and Validity of the Turkish Version of the Feeding/Swallowing Impact Survey

AbstractThe purpose of this study was to translate the Feeding/Swallowing Impact Survey (FS-IS) into Turkish and to test its reliability and validity in caregivers of children with cerebral palsy (CP). Caregivers accompanying the 117 children with CP who were referred for an instrumental swallowing evaluation were included in the study. The FS-IS was translated from English into Turkish by using the forward, backward, forward translation method. Parents completed the Turkish version of the Feeding/Swallowing Impact Survey (T-FS-IS) which has 3 subscales including daily activities, worry and feeding difficulties. Swallowing function was assessed with Videofluoroscopic Swallowing Study, and penetration and aspiration severity was determined according to the Penetration-Aspiration Scale (PAS). The internal consistency, test-retest reliability, construct validity, and discriminant validity of the T-FS-IS were investigated. Internal consistency was excellent with Cronbach alphas all above 0.8 (Total score  = 0.99, daily activities = 0.98, worries = 0.98, and feeding difficulties = 0.96). The Intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.93, demonstrating excellent test-retest reliability. All three subscales of the T-FS-IS including daily activities, worry, and feeding difficulties as well as the total score significantly correlated with the PAS scores. Caregivers whose children had aspiration reported worse scores in the T-FS-IS ...

Sometimes the best goals are soft and squishy like an eggnog filled belly. It’s either very late or very early, depending on your point of view. Either way, I’m sitting here thinking deep, New Year’s-like thoughts. In the other room sleeps a friend who almost wasn’t my friend anymore until we patched things last week. Upstairs sleeps my third daughter whose heart is in need of mending as her marriage comes to an end. Hanging out with dad and his friend on New Year’s Eve was either a low point for her or just exactly what she needed. My thoughts are a warm blend of nostalgia and regret with a sub...

Conclusions: Given the importance of accuracy in height measures to evaluate infant health, it is crucial to carry out more researches in order to safely establish an association between both estimate and real statures. The development of anthropometric protocols, emerged from such researches, would benefit the follow-up of children with severe psychomotor disabilities.RESUMO Objetivo: Revisar estudos que avaliam correspond ência entre a altura estimada por medidas segmentares e a estatura real de crianças com paralisia cerebral. ConclusionsThis review underlines the importance of both the motor and somatosensory tracts for upper limb sensorimotor function in unilateral CP. However, the exact contribution of each tract requires further exploration. In addition, research on the relevance of non-motor pathways is warranted, as well as studies including other types of CP.
