General Anesthetic Management for Emergency Cesarean Section and Postpartum Hemorrhage in a Woman With Fontan Circulation

THE INCIDENCE OF moderate and severe forms of congenital heart disease (CHD) is approximately 6/1,000 of all live births.1 Surgical procedures and perioperative management for CHD patients have improved, and the late survival rate (45 years after first surgery) after neonatal cardiac surgery to repair heart defects has risen to nearly 90%.2 This result naturally has led to an increase in the number of women with CHD who consider becoming pregnant. Approximately 2% of pregnancies involve cardiac disease, and the most common type of maternal cardiac disease is CHD.
