Emergency Child and Adolescent Psychiatry: Updates on Evidence Base and Innovations to Improve Care

Limited access and fragmentation of mental health care for children and adolescents have been longstanding and well-articulated issues for decades. Increasing suicide rates, especially in the younger age groups, violence in schools, and substance use issues have all been highlighted as particular concerns. Despite receiving much attention of various types, including recommendations by professional organizations, excellent initiatives for screening, as well as collaborative programs with primary care and schools, the number of youths presenting in psychiatric crisis to emergency services continues to increase.
