AbstractKey contentThe number of women attending gynaecological services who are taking oral anticoagulants and antiplatelet agents is increasing.Direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) are becoming increasingly popular and offer an alternative to warfarin.Knowledge of the use of anticoagulants in the perioperative period is imperative to provide optimal care and ensure patient safety. It is essential that health professionals practising gynaecology, at all levels, keep up to date to reduce unnecessary cancellations, delays in treatment and increased risks of thrombosis and bleeding.Learning objectivesTo understand the managemen...

Authors: Xie X, Li T Abstract Objective: We investigated the risk of ischaemic stroke in patients with 1 another stroke risk factor (i.e. CHA2DS2-VASc score =1 [males] or 2 [females]) and the impact of different component risk factors. Methods: Database were collected from two hospitals in the city of Hohhot in china. Among 3148 Nonvalvular AF patients not on antiplatelet or anticoagulant therapy, we evaluated males with a CHA2DS2-VASc score of 1 and females with a CHA2DS2-VASc score of 2. The clinical endpoint was the occurrence of ischaemic stroke. Results: Among 546 AF male patients with a CHA2DS2-VASc scor...

CONCLUSIONS: VTE occurrence in this real-world patient cohort was high, reaching almost 20% in certain groups, like those with disseminated pancreatic, lung or ovarian cancer receiving first-line chemotherapy. Furthermore, VTE occurs mostly as a symptomatic event, being likely a result of the prothrombotic state of malignancy. PMID: 32057213 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Authors: Jiang W, Cao C, Shi H, Shou J, Wang D, Wen L, Li C, Ma J Abstract PURPOSE: Previous reports showed that some patients with renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and renal vein tumor thrombus (RVTT) were misdiagnosed pre-operatively. To improve the accuracy of this diagnosis, the clinical characteristics of RCC with missed RVTT diagnosis were analyzed. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed RCC patients with RVTT between January 2000 and December 2015. The survival analysis was estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method. The Cox proportional hazard models were applied to identify risk factors. RESULTS: The missed d...

ConclusionsGreater discordance between surgeon self-reported and actual perioperative VTE chemoprophylaxis is associated with significantly increased risk of VTE. Further understanding of the system characteristics associated with these practices may yield insights into how best to improve appropriate VTE chemoprophylaxis.
