Teaching midwives to poke with needles on non-existing meridians

The survey by Mollart L, et al. Midwives ’ personal use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) influences their recommendations to women experiencing a post-date pregnancy. Women Birth 2018;31:44–51 showing that 89% of registered midwives (among only 16% of respondents) recommend unproven complementary and alternative medicine for women experiencing a post-date pregnancy, acupuncture ranking first (66%), is of great scientific and ethical concern.1 In particular, the authors’ conclusion pledging for “inclusion of complementary and alternative medicine in midwifery education curricula” is unacceptable if it promotes usage rather than a critical rejection of these ineffective and potentially dangerous practices.
