The need for consensus on consensus methods

The science of consensus-oriented-decision-making methods is still in its infancy despite the increased emphasis on patient and multiple stakeholder engagement in clinical research. This process is used for a variety of objectives including research terminology, setting research priorities, establishing core outcome domains and instrument sets, and reporting guidelines. This was a major topic at the most recent OMERACT outcomes meeting in Australia. The key elements of the approach are agreement seeking, collaborative, cooperative, egalitarian, inclusive, participatory.
