Outcomes From a Patient-Centered, Interprofessional, Palliative Consult Team in Oncology.

Conclusions: Patients who completed this interdisciplinary palliative consult service appeared to experience a reduction in their most severe symptoms. Visits to patients during existing appointments or having them attend a half-day clinic appears to have reached those referred. With interdisciplinary integration, clinicians are able to collaborate to address patient care needs. Considerations include how to further integrate palliative and psychosocial care to achieve additional benefits and ongoing monitoring of changes in symptom burden. ConclusionsChemotherapy-na ïve patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer experience a substantial burden from their condition. Furthermore, as castration-resistant prostate cancer progresses from the non-metastatic stage to the early metastatic (pre-chemotherapy) stage, certain symptoms become more common and disturb patients’ lives to a greater extent. The resulting conceptual model for metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer highlights areas that are not adequately assessed with current patient-reported outcome instruments.

Background: As long-term survival rates for multiple myeloma (MM) improve, and patients receive more prolonged courses of treatment, individuals living with MM experience cumulative physical symptom burden and psychosocial distress. However, the relationship between physical and psychosocial symptoms in MM remains poorly understood. Sleep disturbance is a common symptom in MM, and has been linked to both physical symptoms and psychological issues, including fatigue, mood disturbance, and decreased physical function. We test our hypothesis that the interaction between physical and psychosocial health is associated with slee...

The conditions of social, economic and environmental vulnerabilities presented in the region can be amplified by the drought process, and can aggravate the impacts resulting drought events, thus disadvantaging the population of this region, as shown in the Fig. 1. The general perception of the interviewees of the health sector shows an agreement with what is found...

Tens of millions of Americans struggle to sleep at night, and many of them turn to sleeping pills for relief. Prescription and over-the-counter sleep aids are especially popular among older adults. A recent study published in the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry found that roughly one in three adults ages 65 to 80 use these drugs at least occasionally to fall asleep, and OTC meds like Benadryl and Tylenol PM are the pills of choice for sleepless seniors. Experts say this is concerning for a number of reasons. Studies have linked the regular, long-term use of OTC sleep medicines to some potentially serious side effe...

CONCLUSIONS: It has been affirmed that sleep quality is crucial in the changes of distress, pain and general well-being in cancer patients. It affirms that the visual analogue scales assessing sleep quality and fatigue - besides sleep quality and fatigue - are acceptable screening tools of distress and decreased well-being. Their use in clinical practice is recommended for screening in cancer patients and providing indications for onco-psychological treatment. Orv Hetil. 2018; 159(42): 1720-1726.
