This study involved a cross-sectional analysis using data from the Republic of Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2013 to 2015. A total of 8,341 respondents without diabetes and hypertension over 19 years old without missing values were included in the present study. A significant increase was observed in the prevalence of periodontitis with increasing systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure. The percentage of periodontitis increased with increased glucose levels, with similar trends in glycated hemoglobin. The odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for systolic blood pressure of 90≤x

Regulation of transforming growth factor β-mediated epithelial-mesenchymal transition of lens epithelial cells by c-Src kinase under high glucose conditions. Exp Ther Med. 2018 Aug;16(2):1520-1528 Authors: Han ZH, Wang F, Wang FL, Liu Q, Zhou J Abstract Recent studies have reported that high glucose (HG) conditions may contribute to the acceleration of renal cell apoptosis and renal fibrosis by inducing epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) of tubular epithelial cells, in which c-Src kinase and transforming growth factor (TGF)-β are key modulators. In the present study, the roles of c-Src k...

Authors: Al-Kafaji G, Aljadaan A, Kamal A, Bakhiet M Abstract The mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNA-CN) is a surrogate measure of mitochondrial function and altered mtDNA-CN reflects the oxidant-induced cell damage. A previous study by our group demonstrated that a reduction in the renal mtDNA-CN is implicated in the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy (DN), a leading cause of end-stage renal disease in diabetic patients. In the present study, it was investigated whether the mtDNA-CN in the peripheral blood may be utilized as a biomarker for DN in type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients. The study included 50 non-diabet...

Authors: Zhu W, Gong X, Luo C, Lu J Abstract Correlation between the serum cystatin C and substance P in peripheral blood of diabetes mellitus patients complicated with hypertension was investigated. Diabetes mellitus patients with or without hypertension were selected in No. 215 Hospital of Shaanxi Nuclear Industry from December 2015 to February 2017. There were 60 patients with only hypertension (hypertension control group), 60 patients with only diabetes mellitus (diabetes mellitus control group) and 60 patients with diabetes mellitus combined with hypertension (observation group). Levels of serum cystatin C and...

Abstract Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between vitamin D deficiency and thyroid diseases among type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients. Methods: This was a cohort case and control study, 546 T2DM patients and 546 control study participants were enrolled, aged between 25 and 65 years. The subjects were also investigated for fasting blood glucose levels (FBG), post prandial glucose (PPG,) glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), T3, T4, and presence of other comorbid conditions. Thyroid fine needle aspiration biopsy was suggested to patients wh...
