Recovery of Corneal Clarity After DMEK Followed by Rebubbling Versus Uneventful DMEK

Conclusions: A single rebubbling procedure does not increase the CD of the central cornea and but results in significantly higher ECL compared with uneventful DMEK with complete graft attachment.

Authors: Jeng BH Abstract Endothelial keratoplasty (EK) has evolved to become the standard of care over traditional penetrating keratoplasty (PK) for treating isolated corneal endothelial disease. EK provides numerous advantages including faster, more reliable visual rehabilitation, along with a lower allograft rejection rate. There are some situations, however, in which EK may not necessarily be the best option, and PK should at least be considered. In such situations, a careful weighing and balancing needs to be done in conjunction with the patient. PMID: 31600815 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Abstract PURPOSE: Chronic ocular graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) is a long-term complication after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and leads to irreversible visual morbidity due to severe ocular surface impairments including visual disfunction. However, knowledge about the optical function in chronic ocular GVHD is limited because it is difficult to assess quantitative optical function objectively. The development of anterior segment optical coherence tomography has allowed objective quantification of optical function by evaluating corneal higher-order aberrations (HOAs). Therefore, we applied this...

CONCLUSIONS: Though malignant glaucoma is highly refractory to treatment, appropriate management in the form of medical or vitrectomy-hyaloidotomy-zonulectomy-iridotomy could achieve 90% success in this series. PMID: 31587568 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Purpose: To compare the outcomes between mini-simple limbal epithelial transplantation (mini-SLET) and conjunctival autograft (CAG) fixation with fibrin glue after excision of pterygium. Methods: Ninety-two eyes with primary nasal pterygium were prospectively randomized into a CAG control arm and a mini-SLET study arm. Follow-up examinations were set at the first and third day, at weeks 1, 2, and 4, and at the third and sixth month after surgery. The primary outcome measure was the recurrence rate at 1, 3, and 6 months after surgery, whereas the secondary outcome measures were the intraoperative time, postoperative sy...

Purpose: To describe the evolution of best spectacle-corrected visual acuity (BSCVA) after Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK) for very advanced pseudophakic bullous keratopathy (PBK) and to determine whether the thickness of corneal grafts in DSAEK surgery for advanced PBK correlates with BSCVA 6 months postoperatively. Methods: In a prospective, single-center, observational study, 141 eyes treated with DSAEK surgery were studied, from patients requiring posterior lamellar transplantation for advanced PBK. Graft thickness was measured during the surgery and in vivo 6 months later. The primar...

Conclusions: There was no reduction in donor dislocation or SGF in eyes with PP compared with AC GDD, despite the decreased proximity of the shunt from the endothelial graft. Overall, GDD has a significantly adverse effect on long-term graft survival and close follow-up is warranted.

Purpose: To explore the transition of indications and surgical techniques of pediatric keratoplasty in Eastern China in the past 10 years. Methods: Medical charts of 1026 pediatric patients (1059 eyes) who underwent keratoplasties at the Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital of Fudan University from 2008 to 2017 were retrospectively reviewed. The indications for keratoplasty and the surgical techniques were collected and analyzed. Results: A total of 634 infants (≤3 years) (661 eyes), 207 toddlers and older children (4–12 years) (211 eyes), and 185 adolescents (13–18 years) (187 eyes) were included. The...
