Transplantation Blues: Inadvertent Staining of Amyloid Deposits With Trypan Blue

Conclusions: TB can stain corneal amyloid deposits. After PK, staining is limited to the recipient peripheral cornea and has no apparent clinical consequence. However, during DMEK performed after a failed PK, TB stains fibrils accumulated during slow LCD recurrence and scattered on the whole graft. The long-term staining duration indicates strong interactions between TB and amyloid.

Authors: AktaƟ A, Karadavut M, Cansu DÜ, Korkmaz C Abstract OBJECTIVES: To evaluate differences between the patients with familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) with homozygous (Hom), heterozygous (Het) and compound heterozygous (cHet) MEFV mutations in terms of clinical features and severity of the disease, as well as frequency of concomitant disorders, without focusing on Exon 10 mutations. METHODS: The patients with FMF were diagnosed using the Tel-Hashomer diagnostic criteria. The presence of MEFV mutations was investigated in exons 2,3,5 and 10 by multiplex-PCR reverse hybridisation method. All the patie...

Curcumin, the main compound of spice turmeric -as one of the natural products-was demonstrated to possess effective anti-cancer properties, with no significant effect on normal cells in dose and/or time-dependent manner. Authors: Toraih EA, Ameen HM, Hussein MH, Youssef Elabd AA, Mohamed AM, Abdel-Gawad AR, Fawzy MS Abstract Alopecia areata (AA) is a non-scarring hair loss of autoimmune etiology. The autoimmune regulator (AIRE) gene is believed to be an important driver in AA pathogenesis. Genetic variants can alter mRNA expression levels which may provoke an autoimmune response. A total of 337 males (97 AA patients and 240 controls) were enrolled in the current case-control study. On screening of the most frequent variants in the gene, rs2075876 (A/G) polymorphism in intron 5 was selected and genotyped using Real-Time PCR (polymer...

Authors: Liu W, Wang K, Zhao YH, Song GP, Gao W, Li DH Abstract The aim of the present study was to investigate the potential of the Immuknow immune cell function assay for the diagnosis of infection after pediatric living-donor liver transplantation (LDLT). Based on clinical data obtained following liver transplantation, 66 patients were divided into infection (n=28) and non-infection (n=38) groups. The following factors were considered in the present analysis: Primary disease, lymphocyte count, tacrolimus plasma concentration/dose (C0/D) ratio, CD4+ T lymphocyte ATP levels, at pre-transplant stage and at weeks 1-...

Authors: He J, Han X, Wang S, Zhang Y, Dai X, Liu B, Liu L, Zhao X Abstract Bone tissue engineering provides a substitute for bone transplantation to address various bone defects. However, bone regeneration involves a large number of cellular events. In addition, obtaining sufficient source material for autogenous bone or alloplastic bone substitutes remains an unsolved issue. In previous studies, it was confirmed that bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) and endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) had the capacity to promote bone regeneration. Additionally, bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) has been demonstrated to be...

Conclusions: PICU mortality of pediatric cancer and hematopoietic stem cell transplant patients requiring continuous renal replacement therapy is sadly high. Fluid overload at the initiation of continuous renal replacement therapy is the most important and earliest predictor of PICU mortality. Our results suggest that the most commonly used criteria of acute kidney injury, that is, serum creatinine and urine production, are not useful as a trigger to initiate continuous renal replacement therapy. This highlights the urgent need for prospective studies to generate recommendations for effective therapeutic interventions at...

Burn injuries lead to a dysregulated hypermetabolic state and a compromised cutaneous barrier,...
