A new microscopic insight into the thrombogenicity of umbilical catheters

Thrombosis is said to be the new epidemics of neonatal intensive care wards - one of the most high-powered health care facilities of the 21st century. Small diameter vessels, immature hemostasis, congenital diseases and cardiovascular shunts like PDA and PFO contribute to the high risk of thromboembolic events. Owing to decreasing perinatal mortality, the number of neonatal patients increases – 1 in 10 children is born premature, with a total number of 15 million premature births worldwide [1]. Vascular cannulation of the neonates is challenging, though neonates have an exceptional afterbirth access route – catheterization of the umbilical vessels is quick and painless for the baby a nd no anesthesia is needed.
