Increasing medication adherence in older adults who self-neglect: a safety protocol

Objectives: Older community-dwelling self-neglecters often live with multiple comorbid chronic conditions requiring long-term management with medications. Medication non-adherence in this population is high placing them at increased risk for medication non-adherence related outcomes, including mortality. As part of a federally funded RO1 aiming to increase medication adherence in older community-dwelling self-neglecters, this study describes: 1) risks identified by a research team, associated with simply increasing medication adherence in this population and 2) the comprehensive safety strategy designed to minimize these risks.
