What's old is new: Commentary on the state of mobilization of patients in the intensive care unit setting with recommendations for future practice

In light of the recent paper published by Brock and colleagues in 2018 examining new barriers to mobilization in the intensive care unit (ICU) setting, we write to offer commentary on the state of mobilization in the ICU as well as offer recommendations to implement in future practice. Early mobilization in ICU is a cornerstone of nursing practice that has been taught in nursing schools going back decades. However, it isn't until recently that the medical literature is positing early mobilization for patients as a benefit which results in decreased hospitalization length of stay1,2 as well as decreased intra-hospitalization complications.
