Remembering Our History

The profession of oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMS) is an excellent educational model with which one can relate and appreciate the multifarious opportunities present within an ostensibly traditional and inflexible form of academic training. The profession is relatively contemporary in nature, and is better understood when presented in historical context of its evolution. Prior to the end of World War I, there was no organization devoted to the specialty of oral surgery, excepting the Section on Oral Surgery, Anesthesia and Radiology in the American Dental Association.
