Molecular diagnosis and outcome in patients with sepsis: Are emergency clinicians ready for it?

Sepsis remains a common clinical condition encountered in patients presenting to the emergency department (ED) [1]. Many of these patients are diagnosed in the ED and then transferred to other areas of the hospital. The allocation of beds and resources for such patients is directly related to the severity of illness they present. A variety of predictors of outcome have been developed in the ED, in an attempt to properly allocate these sepsis patient resources, as well as placing them in the adequate monitoring units (i.e., intensive care unit, telemetry, regular ward) [2, 3].
