Spouse Criticism/Hostility Toward Partners with Chronic Pain: The Role of Spouse Attributions for Patient Control over Pain Behaviors

Observational (1,5,9,10,30,35), diary (6,23), and laboratory studies (7,8) primarily of married couples coping with chronic pain, indicate that high levels of criticism and hostility from one's spouse are linked to greater pain intensity and decreased function for partners afflicted with chronic pain. Less well established is what may account for such negative spouse behaviors toward their partners with chronic pain.
