Characteristic sonographic features of cribriform papillary thyroid carcinoma for differentiation from other thyroid nodules

Conclusion The criteria for suspecting CV-PTC we proposed provided high sensitivity and specificity. We should be aware that the sonographic findings of CV-PTC are similar to those of follicular tumor or nodular goiter rather than C-PTC. Clinical findings including gender, age, and serum thyroglobulin level may provide us with useful information.

ConclusionWe consider that this technique is useful, however, we have to exercise care in malignant cases as the true-positive rate may be low.

CONCLUSIONS: An appropriate multidisciplinary team is necessary to accurately evaluate primary tumors and lymph nodes at the beginning of and during AS, and to adequately reach a shared-decision with individual patients. If appropriately applied, AS of low-risk PTMC is a safe management strategy offering favorable outcomes and preserves quality of life at low cost. PMID: 33023426 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Authors: Boukheris H, Bettayeb A, Anderson LA, Achour Z, Benbachir FZ, Attar S, Saim H, Rouigeb K, Berber N Abstract Over the last three decades, the incidence of thyroid cancer has increased worldwide. The reasons for this increase remain controversial. In Algeria, however, to date, information on thyroid cancer has been limited to a hospital-based case series. We analyzed data from a population-based cohort study in Oran District, Algeria, to describe demographic and clinicopathological characteristics of patients diagnosed with thyroid cancer between 1993 and 2013. Medical records and pathology reports of thyroi...

Conclusion: Our study showed low recurrence rates in patients with cN0 PTC pathologically confirmed as N1a after PCND. The RFS did not differ according to the extent of thyroid surgery. Considering the low recurrence rate and the surgical morbidity associated with thyroid surgery, less than TT with PCND may be considered for patients with cN0 unilateral PTC even with a pathologic staging of N1a after PCND. Chung Tae Hyuk Kim The optimal initial surgical extent for medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) remains controversial. Previous studies on serum calcitonin are limited to reporting the calcitonin threshold according to anatomical disease burden. Here, we evaluated whether preoperative calcitonin levels can be used to predict optimal surgical extent. We retrospectively reviewed the 170 patients with MTC at a tertiary Korean hospital from 1994 to 2019. We extracted data on preoperative calcitonin level, primary tumor size and the number and location of lymph node metastases (LNMs). To evaluate disease extent, we divided ...

Authors: Singh SS, Krishnan S, Tigapuram NK, Sood A, Satapathy S, Rohilla M, Tanigassalam S, Mittal BR Abstract Thyroid carcinoma has excellent long-term outcome for loco-regional disease with adequate treatment, however outcome declines sharply in distant metastatic disease. Axillary lymph nodal metastases (ALNM) are very unusual in thyroid carcinoma with poorer outcome as they are usually associated with aggressive histopathologies, extensive loco-regional and distant metastatic disease. The authors report two patients of thyroid carcinoma with ALNM and their management, and review of literature of such cases. ...

ConclusionSonography has a high accuracy, specificity and PPV for identifying metastatic cervical lymph node involvement in children with differentiated thyroid carcinoma at presentation. Most of the abnormal lymph nodes were round in shape and had abnormal echogenicity and vascularity. Importantly, this paper emphasizes that in children, nodes with histologically proven metastases from differentiated thyroid carcinoma can be normal in size and shape. In these patients the presence of metastatic involvement might be recognized sonographically only on the basis of abnormal echogenicity and vascularity.

ConclusionLobectomy is sufficient for clinically solitary PTC patients with risk factors of ipsilateral occult carcinoma. For clinically solitary PTC patients with score ≥4, careful preoperative evaluations are required to rule out the contralateral occult carcinoma. Even if contralateral occult carcinoma is not detected preoperatively, TT is recommended for high-risk patients.

In this study, we retrospectively reviewed nodularity and malignancy following thyroid surgery in a high-risk population with high thyroid cancer rates. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Out of 1,007 thyroid patients either referred to or operated on at Ankara Oncology Training and Research Hospital between January 1995 and December 2003, 460 patients with readily available data were included in the study. RESULTS: Of the 460 patients, 74.9% were female and 25.1% were male. The mean age of female patients operated on due to thyroid nodules was 43.7 years (SD: 14.7; range: 12-81) and 47.1 years for males (SD: 14.6; range: 14-80...
