Baylor St. Luke ’s suspends heart-transplant program, reviewing recent deaths

Baylor St. Luke ’s Medical Center is voluntarily suspending its heart-transplant surgeries for 14 days, the hospital announced June 1.  For the next two weeks, the hospital will not accept donor hearts for transplant. Across the nation, a shortage of available organ donors significantly delays heart failure patients ’ time to transplant. The median national waitlist time is 9.3 months 1 with a roughly 8% waitlist mortality. Multiorgan Dysfunction Syndrome (MOD) contributes to adverse outcomes in advanced heart failure (AdHF) patients after mechanical circulatory support (MCS) implantation and is associated with aberrant Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells (PBMC) activity.
