PET/MRI brain imaging in the acute phase of sports concussion

Conclusions Initial results are consistent with the hypothesis that cortical glucose metabolism is elevated and oxidative metabolism is depressed in the acute phase following sports concussion, and normalizes as recovery progresses. This may be related to previously reported large lactate-to-pyruvate ratio in TBI patients as a consequence of mitochondrial dysfunction. Ongoing imaging of study participants will establish the statistical significance and clinical relevance of these findings.
