Sudden cardiac death prediction in the general population and among patients with left ventricular ejection fractions greater than 40%

Sudden cardiac death (SCD) refers to an unexpected and sudden death from cardiovascular cause in a person with or without preexisting heart disease [1,2]. SCD is a major public health problem with reported annual incidence rates ranging from 50 to 100 per 100,000 persons in the general population [3,4]. This corresponds to 7-20% of all deaths and ≈50% of cardiovascular deaths [3–5]. As most sudden cardiac arrests are fatal despite resuscitation attempts and occurs unexpectedly, prevention is inherently difficult [5,6].
