EP News: Basic and Translational

Scroll waves are the basis of the formation of complex spatiotemporal patterns in many excitable chemical and biological systems. Filament-like phase singularities are associated with 3-dimensional scroll waves and considered to be the organizing centers of cardiac arrhythmias. Christoph et  al (Nature 2018;555:667, PMID 29466325) showed that 3-dimensional mechanical scroll waves and filament-like phase singularities can be observed deep inside the contracting heart wall using high-resolution 4-dimensional ultrasound-based strain imaging.
