Do Patients With Higher Baseline BMI Have Improved Weight Loss With Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Versus Sleeve Gastrectomy?

Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (SG) has become the most frequently performed bariatric surgery in recent years [1,2]. The procedure has gained popularity both among surgeons and patients for its seemingly reduced technical complexity and more favorable long-term complication profile. In patients with body mass index (BMI) less than 50 kg/m2, both procedures have been shown to be equally effective in weight loss at three- year follow up [3]. Comparable results are described when not controlling for BMI [2].
