Reduction of Postanesthetic Pediatric Distress: A Coordinated Approach.
CONCLUSIONS: Important elements in reducing emergence distress are preadmission visit, use of a playroom, effective analgesia, anesthetic maintenance without short-acting volatiles, and undisturbed recovery with a parent present for reassurance. PMID: 29784261 [PubMed - in process]
While recreational marijuana is legal in 11 states as of November 2019, more states gravitating toward legalizing the recreational use of the substance, and 33 states allowing medical marijuana, there’s apparently no stopping this trend. Cannabis, in the form of marijuana, hemp, and cannabidiol (CBD) is being used for pain relief, to alleviate stress, cope with anxiety, and a number of other mental health disorders and addictions. Yet, there’s a dearth of clinical studies that have been conducted on the overall effects on a user’s health. Clearly, as Crain’s Detroit Business points out, more ...

CONCLUSIONS: We found very low-certainty evidence from four trials that was insufficient to conclude if there is any benefit of acupuncture, acupressure or laser at P6 point in reducing gagging and allowing successful completion of dental procedures. We did not find any evidence on any other interventions for managing the gag reflex during dental treatment. More well-designed and well-reported trials evaluating different interventions are needed. A 40-year-old man was treated with tonsillectomy and underwent early surgical exploration because of bleeding. Postoperative bleeding complications were treated with bronchoscopy. In addition to obesity, normal thyroid function, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and current tobacco abuse with severe obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, biochemistry revealed severe hypercholesterolemia (total cholesterol 572 mg/dL) and hypertriglyceridemia (1,220 mg/dL). During the postoperative period, low doses of propofol (up to 2 mg/kg/h for 10 hours), along with remifentanil (up to 0.0016 mg/kg/h for 20 hours), midazolam, and tramadol, were neede...
AbstractSevoflurane is one of the most widely used anesthetics with recent concerns rising about its pediatric application. The synaptic toxicity and mechanisms underlying its long term cognition impairment remain unclear. In the present study, we investigated the expression and roles of homeodomain interacting protein kinase 2 (HIPK2), a stress activating kinase involved in neuronal survival and synaptic plasticity, and its downstream JNK/c ‐Jun signaling in the long term toxicity of neonatal Sevoflurane exposure. Our data showed that neonatal Sevoflurane exposure results in impairment of memory, enhancement of anxiety,...
Conclusions: Conscious sedation with nitrous oxide is a useful technique to add to the armamentarium used in the treatment of teeth with symptomatic irreversible pulpitis.
ConclusionAlthough patients appear to tolerate office procedures well, providers should recognize the potential for significant fluctuations in blood pressure during the procedure, especially in older patients.
CONCLUSION: Preoperative fasting times in pediatric patients far exceed the durations set by international guidelines. Given that many children reported extreme feelings of hunger and thirst or emotional effects from the fast, these durations need to be optimized in order to improve patient experience. DISCUSSION: About one third of the participating departments already perform VATS in LA; others have plans to introduce the method. The majority of respondents regard multimorbid, elderly and lung patients as the main target groups, as fewer inflammatory, respiratory and neurological complications are expected.
