Is there a “renal paradox” in chronic heart failure?

Chronic heart failure (CHF) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) are well known to share common risk factors and pathways (including atherosclerotic artery disease, hypertension, neurohormonal activation, endothelial dysfunction and inflammation) and are frequently coexistent, finally resulting in the “cardio-renal syndrome” [1,2].
