Symptom science in heart failure

At least 26 million people worldwide experience chronic heart failure due, in part to the aging of the population and increased longevity associated with improvements in cardiac treatment and increasing adoption of western lifestyles in developing countries.1 Heart failure is a significant and growing cause of morbidity and mortality and excessive health care costs, while symptoms, an important and distressing part of the experience of heart failure, contribute in important ways to poor quality of life and functional deficits, as well as excessive health care resource utilization, and other outcomes.
