We examined the impact of different comorbidities, multimorbidity, lung function and other factors have on survival in COPD and ACO patients. We also examined the causes of death to determine how many patients die of other than respiratory diseases. This retrospective study includes 214 patients with an exacerbation of COPD requiring hospitalisation during the year of 2005. The patients were followed up until the end of year 2015. The survival of ACO patients was significantly higher than COPD patients (4.7 vs. 1.7 years, p = 0.001). Poor lung function predicted worse survival in both patient groups, b...

Authors: De C.o G, Cavarra E, Bartalesi B, Lungarella G, Lucattelli M Abstract COPD can manifest itself with different clinical phenotypes characterized by different disease progression and response to therapy. Although a remarkable number of studies have been carried out, little is known about the mechanisms underlying phenotypes that could guide the development of viable future therapies. Several murine strains mirror some human phenotypes after smoke exposure. It was of interest to investigate in these strains whether different pattern of activation of macrophages, and their distribution in lungs, is associated ...

Authors: Mendes LPS, Parreira VF, Spencer LM, Vieira DSR, Alison JA Abstract The Glittre-ADL test assesses the functional capacity for activities of daily living of people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In the test, a weighted backpack is worn (2.5 kg for women and 5.0 kg for men). The differential in weight between men and women is not common in other tests of exercise capacity and may limit the comparison of the test between sexes. The primary aim of this study was to validate the Glittre-ADL test performed without the backpack in people with COPD. Forty participants with mild to...

Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of the supervised pulmonary rehabilitation programs consisting of either an interval or continuous aerobic exercise program, with a home-based exercise program in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who were overweight or obese. Methods: In this randomized controlled study, 72 overweight and obese patients diagnosed as having COPD were randomly assigned to 3 groups. Group 1 received an interval-type (IT) aerobic exercise program, group 2 received a continuous-type (CT) aerobic exercise program (both groups performed home exercises as wel...
