Monica L. Lypson, MD, MHPE, Director of Medical and Dental Education, Department of Veterans Affairs, Washington, DC Describe your current activities.  In my current role as the Director of Medical and Dental Education for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), I provide leadership, oversight, and coordination for our graduate and undergraduate medical and dental education programs.  This role has a large administrative responsibility, with some significant policy implications for health profession education.  For me, it is important that I continue to care for our nations’ veterans through excellent patient care and bedside teaching. My research interests focus on learner assessment/competencies, historical and contemporary trends in medical education with emphasis on veteran-centered care education, health disparities, and communication skills. I continue to focus on leadership and development for those under-represented in medicine. Other key topics that garner my attention integrate my professional and personal lives—these include investigating implicit bias as well as the contemporary medical marriage, both of which contribute to wellness. What gaps do you see in the current academic medicine scholarship? In health professions education and academic leadership development research, our goal is to make the connection between implementation strategies and clinical outcomes.
