With the White House calling for public and private sector efforts to address prescription drug abuse and heroin use and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issuing controversial guidelines on prescribing opioids for chronic pain, it is important now more than ever that policies addressing the prescription drug abuse epidemic account for suffering on both sides: people with substance use disorders and those with a legitimate need for controlled substances. Currently, extensive legislative, regulatory, law enforcement, and industry efforts are well underway to address abuse.
