Opioid-Sparing Modalities for Nursing: Update on ASPMN Task Force

The National Pain Strategy states, “Every effort should be made to prevent illnesses and injuries that lead to pain, the progression of acute pain to a chronic condition, and the development of high-impact chronic pain.” Studies have indicated ketamine, lidocaine infusions, epidurals and peripheral nerve blocks improve pain manag ement and potentially decrease the transition to chronic pain. As an organization devoted to art and science of pain management, there are substantial ethical implications to reviewing these modalities further.
