Developing Interventions to Improve Function in African Americans with Pain

This presentation describes a program of research focused on maintaining and improving functional status in patients with chronic pain and reducing pain-related disparities. From the identification that African Americans have been found to have higher levels of pain, more pain-related distress, and lower functional status than White, non-ethnic cohorts, and culminating in a longitudinal randomized control trial testing the Power Over Pain- Coaching (POP-C) intervention, several studies are presented.
