2D Follow The Yellow Brick Road: Nitrous Oxide Use for Laboring Women

The goal of this process was to bridge the gap between all natural pain management and IV opioid or epidural anesthesia during labor. Inhaled nitrous oxide (N2O) is a popular method of pain management for labor in the United Kingdom, but has not been widely available in the United States for many years. Following a webinar offered by a professional nursing organization, these nurses embarked on a journey to implement this practice in their own labor and delivery unit. After a literature review and a research roundtable with the Nurse Researcher, the group established there was sufficient evidence to support the safety and efficacy of using N2O this way and brought the idea to an interdisciplinary team, consisting of Obstetricians, Midwives, Pediatricians, Anesthesiologists, and various hospital administrators.
