Mayo Clinic Minute: Stop sharing your lip balm

Besides the ick factor, Dr. Dawn Davis, a?dermatologist at?Mayo Clinic, says sharing your lip balm or lip moisturizer with another person is a bad idea. Sharing these products increases your risk for contracting?cold sores, which are caused by herpes?simplex virus (HSV-1). Dr. Davis says people can carry the herpes virus in their mouth without developing [...]

Conclusion: New onset HSK after keratoplasty primarily resulted in epithelial and stromal lesion, involving both the graft and recipient. Effective treatments included antiviral medications and amniotic membrane transplantation. Delayed treatment may lead to aggravated graft opacification. PMID: 30425853 [PubMed]

We report a case of mucocutaneous Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV)-2 and Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection in a 39-year-old female with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, who presented with a perigenital ulcer. The patient was receiving antiretroviral treatment (ART) for 3 months before presentation. Scraping from the perigenital ulcer was positive for HSV-2 and Treponema pallidum using polymerase chain reactions (PCR). The extent and duration of the lesions led us to consider the possibility of coinfection with CMV. The patient also tested positive for CMV by PCR. On subsequent follow-up after 8 weeks, the genital lesions had he...

Fingolimod is an oral medication approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2009 for the treatment of relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS). Initial clinical trials did not show a significantly increased rate of serious infections with fingolimod therapy. However, a mildly increased risk of less serious infections, such as varicella zoster virus and herpes simplex virus, was reported. Recently, however, several instances of serious opportunistic infections have been reported. In the years following approval of fingolimod for use in multiple sclerosis (MS), seven cases of cryptococcal meningitis in patients und...

ObjectiveTo assess the prevalence of all known human herpesviruses (HHV) in tonsils of an age ‐stratified large sample of immunocompetent children and adults.MethodsPatients undergoing tonsillectomy for benign indications were recruited in 19 French hospitals. After resection, the entire outer surfaces of right and left half tonsils were extensively brushed. A highly sensitive species ‐specific multiplex assay was used to detect herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV1), HSV2, Epstein‐Barr virus (EBV; types 1 and 2), and human cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNA in 688, as well as varicella zoster virus (VZV), HHV6A, HHV6B, HHV7, and Kapo...

van A Abstract Melaleuca alternifolia tea tree oil (TTO) is largely used in cutaneous infections. Clinical observations reported antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral activities, whereas in vitro experiments ascribed most of biological properties to terpinen-4-ol. Since different plant chemotypes and storage conditions result in variations of chemical composition of commercially available TTO, in this study we investigated the antimicrobial activity and the chemical profile of ten commercially available TTO products. The antimicrobial activity was assessed against Candida glabrata, Herpes simplex virus type 1 (...

CONCLUSION: In cases of male fertility disorders a microbiological clarification is recommended. Further studies on the effect of STI on male fertility in larger collectives are necessary, particularly for Caucasian populations. The utilization of existing preventive measures, such as screening for Chlamydia in young women and HPV vaccination also for young males, should be intensively promoted.
