Rhythm management in myotonic dystrophy: Progress has been made, but unsettled issues remain

The myotonic dystrophies (types 1 and 2) are autosomal dominant, multisystem diseases with relevancy to cardiac electrophysiologists because of the risk for arrhythmias. The more common and severe myotonic dystrophy is type 1, which is the focus of this editorial. The link between arrhythmias and myotonic dystrophy has been known almost from the first description of the disorder by Steinert in 1909. Early studies described conduction abnormalities and arrhythmias in single patients and in small series.
