UAB-led study shows promise for bone density drug

An alternative treatment for people taking glucocorticoids shows promise through a UAB-led study.   Long-term use of these drugs, which includes prednisone, causes osteoporosis, which results in a yearly bone fracture rate of 5 percent.  A UAB-led international study published in “The Lancet Diabetes& Endocrinology ” medical journal, and headed by Kenneth Saag, professor of medicine at UAB, indicates alternative drugs can be effective.
