A Culture of Civility: Positively Impacting Practice and Patient Safety
THERE HAVE BEEN and most likely will continue to be significant changes and growing demands in the work environment of nurses. As nurses navigate the rapid change and stressors often present in critical care nursing practice, one dynamic that we should not have to face is incivility in our practice. Workplace incivility can also be referred to as bullying, lateral or horizontal violence, and harassment, or as an environment in which “we eat our young.”1-3 Incivility, sadly, is not a new problem in the nursing profession especially as environmental stressors continue to evolve.
