1353 Inhibition of sebocyte HDAC activity promotes cytokine expression: An epigenetic model for acne pathogenesis by Propionibacterium acnes

Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) is considered a contributing factor to the inflammation detected in follicles of patients with acne vulgaris. However, the ubiquitous distribution of P. acnes throughout the skin contrasts with the isolated occurrence of inflammatory lesions, leading to the hypothesis that the local environment and metabolic state of P. acnes may influence its interaction with the follicle. Under hypoxic conditions, P. acnes produces short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) such as propionic or butyric acid, and we have previously shown that these SCFAs promote inflammatory gene expression by keratinocytes (Sci Immunol, 2016).
