Nutritional Considerations for Dialysis Vegetarian Patients, Part Two

This is the second piece of a 2-part series on educating practitioners and patients on how to successfully follow a vegetarian diet while on dialysis. The first piece focused on education for the practitioner. This summary and handout will provide education tips for use with the vegetarian dialysis patient.

ConclusionsThe apparent survival advantage among blacks over whites treated with dialysis may be attributed to selected transition of a subset of whites with more severe comorbid conditions onto dialysis.

ConclusionsMarked differences in risk for ESKD across types of donor-recipient relationship were observed for Asian, black, and white donors. These findings warrant further validation with more robust data to better inform clinical practice guidelines.

We report on the prespecified secondary outcome, echocardiographic indexes of LV function, from a previously reported study of the effect of lung ultrasound (US)-guided dry weight reduction on systolic blood pressure.Study DesignSingle-blind randomized trial.Settings &Participants71 clinically euvolemic hypertensive hemodialysis patients in Greece and Slovenia.InterventionThe active intervention group’s (n = 35) volume removal was guided by the total number of lung US B-lines observed every week before a midweek dialysis session. The usual-care group (n = 36) was treated using standard-of-care...

Publication date: Available online 11 November 2019Source: Journal of Membrane ScienceAuthor(s): Shuwei Zhao, Pengjia Dou, Jianfeng Song, Long D. Nghiem, Xue-Mei Li, Tao HeAbstractPreparation of dialysate for hemodialysis (or dialysis) requires dilution of the dialysis concentrate with purified water. Present practice contains two steps: first to purify water, and then water is transported to clinic to mix with the dialysate concentrate before treatment. As a new forward osmosis dialysis hybrid process, based on osmotic dilution, is evaluated for decentralized health care systems. A commercial cellulose triacetate (CTA) an...

Two German companies have paired up on the development of a technology that could disrupt the breast implant market. BellaSeno will use Evonik's Resomer bioresorbable polymer in its Senella breast scaffolds with a proprietary additive manufacturing process that avoids the use of silicone implants, some of which have raised major safety concerns. BellaSeno plans to begin first-in-human clinical trials of the Senella scaffolds with Resomer in Germany this quarter. Evonik has agreed to supply its Resomer polymer for clinical and commercial use. The scaffolds are designed to guide the growth of natural tissue using the patient...

ConclusionsOur results showed that, in ESRD patients, CRP and TNF-α seem to be largely affected by patients’ comorbidities, unlike IL-1β, which might be affected more by the dialysis process even in the absence of comorbidities.

The objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to assess whether, and in which degree, CKD was associated with falls and fractures in adults. A systematic search in PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, and The Cochrane Library was performed on 7 September 2018. All retrospective, cross-sectional, and longitudinal studies of adults (18 years of older) that studied the association between CKD, fractures, and falls were included. Additional studies were identified by cross-referencing. A total of 39 publications were included, of which two publications assessed three types of outcome and four publications assessed two types...

Abstract In the future, stem cell-based technologies may be harnessed to replace conventional dialysis and transplantation in patients with diabetic nephropathy. Recently, there has been considerable effort to improve methods for the differentiation of human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) into kidney cells in culture. Here, we present a protocol for obtaining more advanced kidney structures than have currently been possible in vitro, including vascularized glomeruli and tubular elements. HPSCs are first differentiated in 2D culture to a kidney progenitor stage. These cells are then dissociated and injected subcuta...

Abstract Extracellular vesicles are lipid bilayer enclosed structures secreted by all cell types. Their cargo includes proteins, lipids, RNAs, and DNA, which reflect the physiological state of their cells of origin. Recently, urinary extracellular vesicles have emerged as a valuable source of biomarkers for kidney and systemic disease.Unfortunately, all existing methods for extracellular vesicle isolation from urine are time consuming and/or expensive. Thus, they are not adaptable to large-scale studies and unsuitable for clinical use without special equipment in the laboratory. Recently, our group has devised a s...
