Who needs antipsychotic maintenance treatment and who does not? Our need to profile and personalize the treatment of first episode psychosis

Recently, a number of studies were published showing that not all patients who are in remission after having experienced a first episode of psychosis do need maintenance antipsychotic treatment (Wunderink et al., 2013; Gaebel et al., 2016). These studies point to growing awareness of the potential drawbacks of the use of antipsychotic drugs, particularly on the long term (Murray et al., 2016).
