Proverb comprehension deficits in patients with schizophrenia —Neurocognitive and social cognitive correlates

Proverbs are used to communicate norms, to create intimacy, and to convey complex relations between people and their worldview (Gibbs 2001). Accordingly, the everyday communication of schizophrenic patients, for whom proverb comprehension has been described as deficient, suffers under their tendency to interpret proverbs literally. However, even though schizophrenic patients' proverb comprehension deficits are well known, much uncertainty still exists about the causes of those deficits and different theories have been proposed (Thoma and Daum 2006).
