Oxytocin and sexual function in males and females with schizophrenia

In people with schizophrenia, social affiliative function, including sexual behavior, is often impaired. Approximately 50% of persons with schizophrenia experience sexual dysfunction, though clinicians underestimate this (Dossenbach et al., 2005). Sexual dysfunction may be related to symptoms, psychosocial factors, and psychotropic medications (de Boer et al., 2015), and can impact physical health, quality of life, and medication adherence. Therefore, this is an important aspect of treatment for this population.
