CONCLUSION: The Korean urgency classification for LTx is determined by using very limited parameters and may not be a true reflection of urgency. Status 0 patients seem to have poor outcomes compared to the other urgency status patients, despite having the highest priority for donor lungs. Further multi-center and nationwide studies are needed to revise the lung allocation system to reflect true urgency and provide the best benefit of lung transplantation. Roche has won a nod from FDA for a new diagnostic for individual blood donation testing. The Basel-Switzerland-based company’s cobas Babesia test is for use on the cobas 6800/8800 system. Cobas Babesia detects parasites that live in red blood cells. Roche said this test is an important advancement because the Babesia parasite cannot be detected in traditional plasma or serum samples. The test can detect the four-common species of Babesia and employs the new whole blood collection tube, which simplifies Babesia sample preparation by consolidating steps within the tube itself to provide an efficient solutio...

This study evaluated the impact of preoperative clopidogrel exposure on outcomes of coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG).MethodsPatients undergoing isolated CABG from January 2010 to February 2018 at a single institution were included. Primary stratification was based on exposure to clopidogrel within 5 days of CABG. Primary outcomes included blood product transfusion and mediastinal reexploration for bleeding. Secondary outcomes included early and late mortality, major postoperative complications, and hospital readmissions. Multivariable Cox regression was used to evaluate the risk-adjusted impact of preoperative clopid...

We report four patients with newly diagnosed FLT3-ITD-positive AML who had pneumonia at presentation. All four cases required induction chemotherapy with 7+3 which could not be given due to their poor general condition, secondary to pneumonia. Therefore, they were given low-intensity therapy, in the form of azacytidine, to prevent further progression of AML while they were recovering from pneumonia and became well enough to tolerate intensive induction chemotherapy. This treatment strategy of using a bridge before intensive chemotherapy was successful in our patients and 3 out 4 achieved documented remission. In our opinio...

The objective of the study was to estimate the current direct-action antiviral candidates, according to risky practices. The exposed population was determined according to each risky practice and age, based on the data obtained in two epidemiological studies and other bibliographic sources. The overall prevalence of positive serology for the Hepatitis C virus according to the analyzed data was 1.1% (41% with an active infection). The most at-risk group are intravenous drug users (60,368-82,454). It is estimated that between 37,387 to 51,065 patients would be infected via sexual transmission, between 55,505 and 75,812 patie...

A 14-year-old girl with a history of keratitis-ichthyosis-deafness (KID) syndrome, a rare autosomal dominant condition, was referred to the Department of Plastic Surgery at Brussels University Hospital in June 2016 for progressively worsening inguinoperineal ulceration exacerbated by overapplication of combination drug treclinax (tretinoin and erythromycin). On assessment, a large area of purulent papillomatous hyperkeratosis with follicular plugging, likely superimposed bacterial colonization, and deep ulceration were noted requiring thorough debridement. A first procedure was performed in June 2016 with hydrosurgical de...
