Universal vs targeted cholesterol screening

The optimum method for screening for dyslipidemia in children and adolescents has been controversial. In many European countries, cascade screening is used. This approach starts with identification of an adult with dyslipidemia and then screens other family members. Historically, in the United States, an approach based on family history was used, but research demonstrated that this approach missed many children and adolescents with substantial elevation of LDL-C. This led to the suggestion that a universal screening approach, in which children have their cholesterol measured once, was a better option.
