Generalized anxiety disorder and associated factors in adults in the Amazon, Brazil: A population-based study

Anxiety disorders are the most frequently occurring mental health disorders (McEvoy et al., 2011). One such disorder is generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), which is characterized by excessive worry or fearfulness about events and is associated with heightened tension, uneasiness and irritability; it may cause physical symptoms such as restlessness, fatigue, muscle stiffness, and trouble concentrating or sleeping (National Institute for Health and Care excellence, 2014). Anxiety disorders coexist with other mental disorders, such as depression, alcohol dependence, bipolar disorder and undiagnosed medical illnesses, which have serious and debilitating consequences (Davidson et al., 2010; McEvoy et al., 2011).
