Bronchial mucosal Interferon- α/β and pattern recognition receptor expression in experimental rhinovirus-induced asthma exacerbations

Bronchial epithelial interferon- α/β protein expression was deficient in asthma. Lower epithelial interferon-α/β production was associated with adverse clinical outcomes following rhinovirus infection in vivo. Boosting deficient anti-viral immunity in asthma would likely ameliorate exacerbations.
